NH Setting SAIL – Durham Technical Assistance

Strafford Regional Planning Commission staff worked with the Town of Durham Leadership Team and Town Planner to amend the Town’s floodplain management ordinance (Article XV – Flood Hazard Overlay District). The amendments require 2′ of freeboard for all new construction/substantial improvements in the Special Flood Hazard Area (100-year floodplain), and encourage (but not require) any parties seeking to build on lands designated as “Advisory Climate Change Risk Areas” (i.e., lands outside of the mapped Special Flood Hazard Area that are vulnerable to 3.9′ of sea-level rise + storm surge) to adhere to the Town’s floodplain management standards.
